Our Exercise Programmes

Exercise information for professionals

Hackney Stop Falls runs two types of scheme:

  • A 24-week PSI course (postural stability instruction), following the nationally validated and evidence-based “FAME” programme for falls prevention
  • A supported home-exercise programme, following the OTAGO model

Our instructors are all advanced exercise teachers, CRB-checked, members of the Register of Exercise Professionals and PSI qualified.

How to refer

Although we can accept self-referrals with GP clearance, the exercise programmes form part of the Hackney Falls Care Pathway, so most clients are referred via a GP, health or social care professional. You should screen potential participants using our screening tools and referral forms, and, importantly, try to identify, investigate and minimise other possible contributory risk factors that may be affecting your client. TIP: Are you directing your client to the right scheme? If their priority is weight management or cardiac rehab, for instance, the Hackney Exercise Referral scheme is going to be more suitable. If the client is less vulnerable but clearly osteoporotic, consider our Osteoporosis referral class. And always check at the outset that your client actually does want to exercise.

Key points

  • We do not charge participants for exercise, except the “drop in” PSI graduate class at King’s Hall, which costs £2.05. We do not organise transport to community PSI classes, but we can help with applications for community transport.
  • There is a waiting time of approximately 2 - 4 weeks for new participants
